Two teams well-matched tonight in the Cage of Dreams.
Russ, new boy Pip, old boy Bob, Mehdi and The Cat played as the Wine Gums. Scouse Phil, New Hugh, Speedy Steve and Mad Margaret were the Blues opposition. Three nothing to the Gums in 20 minutes was pulled back to three-all at half time.
Then it was largely tit-for-tat in the second period with the Blues leading by two goals and eventually pegged back for a 7-7 result.
Roustabout Russ was the shooting star of the night with a superb personal tally of six goals for the Gums. Speedy Steve Bates was the hotshot for the opposition with a fine hat-trick and a brace from Chairman Phil.
New Hugh chipped in with a sneaky one following the only defensive mix-up of the match between Granite Bob and Pip, and Mad Margaret capped another fine display by wrong-footing The Cat for her well-taken goal.
The Iranian Assassin had one of his ‘nights’ and scored only one and Mehdi was not best pleased to have one ruled out for running and another being pulled back by PAR ( Phil’s Assistant Refereeing) and by the close was raging. During the post match finger-wagging he reminded everyone that he was, after all, 67 years old.
Walking footie debutant Pip, rolled back the years with a great opening performance linking well with sharpshooting Russ and The Assassin, before his rush of red mist.
Russ coaches the Hastings Junior team and clearly relishes his chance to show the non-existent crowd that he has still got more than it takes to be a player and yet his involvement and encouragement of our senior player shows his coaching pedigree. As a result, Old Bob had a really good game, making two last moment interceptions which kept down Steve’s tally.
The Cat performed well, making a string of good saves and a couple of crackers – one in each half – from Phil and Margaret.
Match played in tremendous spirit despite the post match spat and we welcome another new player to the squad as we go from strength to strength.
MOM: Russ for a fine all round display and a double hat-trick.
