An exhilarating display of the beautiful game in the Cage of Dreams tonight. Two well-matched teams had at each other with gusto for a thrilling five all result.

The Blues – captained by Chairman Phil – took an early unanswered three-nil lead thanks to the heroics of The Cat in goal. He pounced and foiled six shots in the first 12 minutes before New Hugh opened the scoring in the 13th. His brace, two from Scouse Phil and one from The Iranian Assassin made up the Blues’ tally. Medhi(67), Phil and Old John linked well together in the first half and the Wine Gums originally had no answer.

But time and quality will tell. Once Granite Bob and New Hugh switched teams at the break it was a completely different game. Roustabout Russ – always coaching, always cajoling a better performance from his team – and Poppi began clicking like a couple of ageing castanets. They opened their account against the previously imperious Cat with a cruel Medhi deflection, followed by a great Strike from Russ, a Mad Margaret wrong-foot special and a curler from the Serbian Maestro that he saw too late and got under his heavy, falling body brought the scores level and there it stayed.

There were some inspirational passages of play from both teams and real technique was shown off to an audience of parents waiting for their sprogs to train after the grandfathers’ finished. Walking football sounds a bit limp – until you actually play it with this kind of first touch accuracy.
Hastings 1066 goes forward at the gallop.

MOM: The Cat for a string of great saves which kept The Blues in it.
